Glass, ceramic ink, video-controlled led lights
Two-part artwork Water Lilies is part of the Turku Student Village Foundation’s (TYS) housing development Tyyssija.
The artwork is a layered photograph printed on glass with ceramic inks. Behind the glass there are video-controlled led lights. The inspiration for its water lilies and pond theme came from the architecture of the building and the space reserved for the work.
Walking into Tyyssija’s courtyard is like diving through the building’s structures. The staircase and upper platform located in the same courtyard made my thoughts go to being by a pond.
Water lilies and some other water plants are depicted in the work. The video-controlled LED mesh that lights up in the evenings brings new layers to the work. The video reminds us of the rippling of the water surface and reflections of the sky. These reflections of the water surface can be seen simultaneously with the underwater world. My long-term interest in Japan, it´s culture and visual traditions can be seen as one of the things that influenced this work.
